Italian Market

I know this may sound odd, especially since we live in a predominately French area...but we found an Italian market! Yes, a true Italian market, it totally reminds me of one that you would find on Franklin Ave. I was in heaven and we will be shopping there again since it is about 5 minutes from our house. Jay was even impressed!

They had prosciutto, hunks of Parmesan cheese, fresh pasta, more olives than you can imagine, antipasto, fresh bread, pizza, and cannoli, just to name a few. When Arabella spotted all the olives, she wanted to climb in the case, we had to pull her away, she loves her olives! She is turning into quite the little Italian! We tried some of the pizza. I tried one that was just olive oil, garlic, oregano and some other herbs and reminded me of one that my Poppy used to make when I was little. Jay had one with spinach, artichokes and mushrooms and it was great! Arabella even had a taste of her first cannoli!

First House Guest of 2010

Last weekend we had our first house guest of 2010! Lori came for a long weekend visit and we had so much fun! Arabella enjoyed playing with Auntie (which she has gotten pretty good at saying) and they even watched part of their favorite movie together...Benji.

Since Jay, Arabella and I really had not had a chance to explore Montreal too much before her visit, we did many of the touristy things. But that was OK, since it helped us to get a feel for the layout of the City and where all the fun things to do are.

We started out Saturday morning with a trip to Marche Atwater. It is one of the many markets in Montreal. Our French tutor suggested we check it out and we were all very happy that we did. The Marche (or market) is located in what appears to be an old warehouse. It consists of many different stalls or shops. There are flower shops, fromageries (cheese shops), boulangerie (bread), boucher (butcher), and many other shops. Everything is fresh and I am certain that if they don't carry what you are looking for it doesn't exisit!

Bauutiful flowers

Fresh pastries

Have you ever seen so many types of mushrooms in one place?

Fresh fruit

So many sausages to choose from!

We had lunch at the boulangerie and picked up fresh meat for dinner. Although on the weekends it is very busy and hard to really check things out. We made a return trip on Monday and it was so much nicer and relaxed. We will be checking out the other Marches in the City!

From Marche Atwater, we headed downtown. Our first stop was the Basilique Notre-Dame. Jay and I had visited this magnificent church on a prior trip to Montreal, but it is worth a return trip words cannot explain the beauty and it takes your breath away. When Lori returns, we are planning on attending Mass there. Here is some history (taken from http://www.basiliquenddm.org/en/basilica/history.aspx):

Dedicated to Our Lady the Blessed Virgin – “Notre Dame” – the small original chapel was operated at first by the Jesuits. Then came the Sulpician Fathers, who in 1657 undertook construction of a larger church. The Sulpician François Dollier de Casson was its architect, and the present-day Notre-Dame Street served as the original site. Its construction, in Baroque style was completed between 1672 and 1683.

By 1800, Dollier’s church had become too small, and the Fabrique decided to build the church we know today. To design the new church, the building council engaged the services of the New York architect James O’Donnell – himself an Irish Protestant by origin. O’Donnell and the Fabrique opted for the Gothic Revival style then in vogue in England and the United States. The main construction work took place between 1824 and 1829.

O’Donnell did not live to see his work completed. He died in Montreal in 1830. Just prior to his death, he had converted to Catholicism, and was buried in the new church’s crypt, where his grave is marked by a plaque.

The old church set back from the road was demolished in the summer of 1830, except for its bell tower, which survived until 1843, when Notre-Dame Basilica’s twin towers were completed by the architect John Ostell. The western tower, nicknamed La Persévérance (Perseverance) and finished in 1841, houses the great bell christened “Jean-Baptiste,” weighing 11 tons (11,000 kilograms or 24,000 pounds). The eastern tower, nicknamed La Tempérance (Temperance), was completed in 1843 and houses a carillon of 10 bells.

In 1889, Curé Léon-Alfred Sentenne commissioned the architects Perreault and Mesnard to build a chapel that would accommodate ceremonies for smaller congregations, such as marriages and funerals. Named the Chapel of Notre-Dame du Sacré-Cœur (Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) and consecrated on December 8, 1891, the date of the feast of the Immaculate Conception, it was built in Gothic Revival style with a wealth of sculptural motifs.

Unfortunately, a fire seriously damaged the chapel on December 7, 1978. Reconstruction was undertaken by the architectural firm of Jodin, Lamarre, Pratte and Associates, whose plan suggested rebuilding the first two levels to be identical to the original chapel, with skilled carpenters, sculptors and woodworkers using traditional methods. The vault was built in a modern style allowing for natural lighting. The new chapel was opened in 1982.

Stylistically, the church’s look indoors in its early years was very different from its present appearance. The wall at the end of the sanctuary lay flat and was lit by a large window, in the traditional manner of English Gothic churches. Six paintings taken from the old church were hung on this wall. For economy’s sake, the old church’s high altar was moved into the new sanctuary. This altar stands today on the west wall of the side chapel dedicated to Saint Marguerite d’Youville. In the nave, the columns were painted to give a realistic impression of veined marble. This work was executed by an Italian artist from New York, Angelo Pienovi.

Between 1870 and 1900, the second phase of decoration of the church was the work of Curé Victor Rousselot and Victor Bourgeau, Quebec’s most active architect of that era. While travelling in France, Rousselot had been deeply impressed by the style and symbolism of the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, which he proposed as a source of inspiration for Bourgeau. The blue and gold colours chosen, the gilded leaves in the vaulting and on the columns are especially reminiscent of the Sainte-Chapelle. This polychrome decoration consists entirely of sculpted wood.

It took the original workmen only 35 months to complete the church, working from April to October between 1824 and 1829.

At the time of its consecration, Notre-Dame Church was the largest house of worship of any religious denomination in North America

The three statues on the façade of the Basilica represent Montreal (the Virgin Mary), Quebec (Saint John the Baptist) and Canada (Saint Joseph).

Céline Dion and René Angélil were married at Notre-Dame Basilica on December 18, 1994.

From here we walked around Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal) to the Vieux-Port (Old Port). It was nice to walk around and get a feel for the City. We will be back soon.

On Monday, we went to Mont-Royal, which gives you amazing views of the City.

From Mont-Royal we visited Saint Joseph's Oratory. This is another amazing religious site. It sits high above Montreal. I would like to go back in the spring or summer when the trees are out and when they reopen the Nativity exhibit. The following are some facts about the Shrine:

Visitors can climb up to 283 steps at Saint Joseph's Oratory between street level and the Basilica.

A flight of 99 wooden is reserved for prayer and for those pilgrims who wish to climb on their knees.

The carillon consists of 56 bells and was originally designed for the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It was installed at the Oratory in 1954

The Oratory Museum has a collection of over 300 nativity from more than 100 countries.

Two million visitors and pilgrims visit the Oratory every year.

The basilica dome has a diameter of 39 meters (125 feet) and rises 236 meters (856 feet) above sea level. It is the highest point in the city of Montreal. Aviation authorities require that the cross on top be illuminated.

The Basilica can seat 2200 people.

Pope Pius IX declared Saint Joseph Patron of the Universal Church in 1870.

Before religious life, Alfred Bessette bounced from job to job working variously as a tinsmith, blacksmith, cobbler, farmer and millworker.

Every year the Oratory distributes over 100,000 bottles of Saint Joseph’s oil.

The basilica was consecrated on October, 19 2004, by Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte, Archibishop of Montreal on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Oratory.

Here is a picture of the Oratory (but it does not do it justice):

After this we headed back to the West Island and stopped at Fairview Pointe Claire for a little shopping. All in all, we had a great day!

We were sad to see Auntie Lori leave but know that she will be back to visit. We miss you!

Our Little Gymnast

And so it has started, it seems that our Little Bean is turning into a gymnast. Maybe it has something to do with genetics (Jay and I were both gymnasts) or it could be her age where she is starting to become fearless! This scares me to death, Jay on the other hand just goes with the flow and lets her experiment.

It all started about 2 weeks ago. She would reach up and hold the edge of the kitchen table and just pick her feet off the ground. As the nights went by, she would go to each corner, rotating around the table and do pull ups and/or swing from the table. Now it is a nightly occurrence. I am amazed at how strong she is. I had thought about starting her in tumbling classes, but most do not have classes for children as young as her. They usually start around 2 years old. However, today while Arabella and I were running errands, we came across Le Petite Gym. So out of curiosity, I went in to get some information. Lo and behold, they have classes for children her age! Yeah! I told the instructors the story of her nightly "table hanging" and they were impressed. It seems that kids her age really don't do that. Before leaving, I signed Arabella up for a beginning tumbling class to see how she does. She wanted to play with the other kids that were having a class so I am hoping she enjoys it.

Here is a sneak peek at our future gold medalist in the uneven bars!

Diet Motiviation

I thought this poem might give some of you who have resolved to get back on the diet bandwagon some motivation as well as a little laugh. I received this from my old Weight Watchers leader in Ohio.

IT'S JANUARY!

'Twas the month after Christmas when all thru the house,
Nothing would fit me, not even a blouse!
The cookies I'd nibbled, the eggnog I'd taste,
at the holiday parties had gone to my waist!
I remember the marvelous meals all prepared,
the gravies and sauces, the beef "nicely rared".
The wine and the rum balls, the bread and the cheese and the way I NEVER said,
"No thank you, please."
As I dressed myself in my husband's old shirt,
I said to myself (as only I can), "You can't spend a winter disguised as a MAN!"
So, -away with the last of the sour cream dip, get rid of the fruit cake,
every cracker & chip!
Every last bit of food that I like must be banished,
'til all of the additional "ounces" have vanished!
I won't have a cookie, not even a lick!
I'll want only to chew on a crisp celery stick!
I won't have hot biscuits, or corn bread or pie,
I'll munch on a carrot and quietly cry.
I'm hungry...I'm lonesome...and life is a bore!
But, isn't that what January is for?
Unable to giggle, no longer a riot,
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL! and to all A GOOD DIET!

2010 "Resolutions" Proposals

Resolutions are tricky. On the one hand, who is not invigorated by a fresh start and the potential for improvement and change? On the other, some of us are known to bite off more than we can chew (myself included), taking on more than we can manage, and in no time we throw in the towel and are back to our old habits.

I am not a fan of the word resolution, therefore, I am calling my Resolutions, Proposals. By using proposal instead of resolution, putting them in writing and posting them on the blog, I feel I have more accountability. And more accountability can and should lead to greater success. It will also allow me to share my progress and at the end of the year report back on how I did.

So without further ado, here are my Proposals (in no specific order)....

1. Teach Arabella how to make snow angels and catch snowflakes on her tongue. This is a proposal stems from fond memories that I have of my own childhood. I remember playing the in snow with my mom and brother and we used to make snow angels. We used to have so much fun and this is a "tradition" that I would like for Arabella to be a part of.

2. Join a Mom's Group. I have already begun the process for joining the Wee Wiggles. It is one of Montreal's largest and most active mom's group on the West Island. I am looking forward to joining to meet new friends and to have some wonderful play dates and groups for Arabella. We need to get out the house and experience all that Montreal and the area has to offer, so bu joining this group, I hope to achieve this.

3. Journal. I would like to start journaling more often. I am not too sure why, other than it helps to clear my thoughts and refresh me.

4. Yoga. I loved doing yoga and would like to get back into it. Not only does it relax me, but it helps to keep my mind and body in top performance. I love the peace and quiet that comes with practicing. It will also help with the back issues that I have right now and it will continue to keep me limber and flexible. I need to be in order to keep up with Arabella and all her energy. In theory, I would like to find a studio and be able to attend class at least once a week.

5. Pre-Arabella Weight. I need to get back to my Pre-Arabella weight. Not only will I feel better, but I will be able to wear all the clothes that are hanging in my closet. This will be a challenge for me, but I am going to try my hardest to get back to where I should me. Not only do I need to do this for me, but I also need to be in good health and shape for Arabella and Jay. I have started my exercise regime again and we do not have "junk" in the house. I know it takes hard work and dedication, and I am ready to give it my all.

6. Run 5K. A follow up to Number 5, is running a 5K. I am not a runner so this will be a challenge for me. Who knows where it will lead, maybe I will become a runner. It is also motivation to aid in my weight loss.

7. Learn French. My lessons will be starting next week. I am not sure that I will become fluent in French, but I would like to learn enough so that I can manage and understand people when we are out. It would also be helpful when we go out to eat as many menus are in french. I would also like to be able to have Arabella become bilingual while we are living here. So if Jay and I are speaking French at home, it will be that much easier for her to pick up.

8. Create Wedding Album. As many of you know, Jay and I just received our wedding photos last summer. Yes, that would be 3 years after our wedding. Part of the legal agreement that we came to with the photographer was that we would receive all the photos on DVD/CD but we would not get an album. Therefore, we do not have one. So I would like to create one. There are many online websites that help you to create beautiful albums. It will be a creative outlet for me and I am looking forward to it.

9. Update Arabella's Scrapbook. As a shower gift, I was given a beautiful scrapbook for Arabella and the chronicling of her first year. For a while I did really well keeping it up to date. But then I slacked off so I need to finish it up.

10. Clean Eating Cooking Method. I subscribe to a wonderful magazine called Clean Eating. It encourages you to eat and cook food that is raw and unprocessed and does not have preservatives. They also suggest eating foods that have no more than 5 ingredients listed in them. We do a good job of eating a lot of organic foods, as well as, fruits and vegetables. We eat meat this is organic, free range and not given hormones. So if I follow the method, it will help our overall lifestyle and health.

11. Create a Home keeping Schedule and Stick to it. This is something that I have been wanting to do for a long time. Now that I am home with Arabella, I think that it will be easier to stick to. It is also easier to do a few things every day instead of waiting until one day on the weekend to clean the whole house. By creating this schedule it will allow us more time to do things as a family. And it is always nice to have a clean and orderly home. I think that if I can do this, Martha would be so proud!

12. Go through Clothes and Shoes. I am going to go through every piece of clothing that I have. I will do the same with my shoes. I will get rid of or donate anything that is ripped, torn, stained, outdated or I just won't wear again. This one will be tough for me, but I need to do it.

13. Travel and Explore. Living in a new country will allow us to visit places we have never been to. We will also be able to travel to different provinces. I am also looking forward to exploring Old Montreal and Quebec City. There can be an adventure each time we walk out our door.

14. Catch up with Family and Friends. I realize that time is precious and you never know what tomorrow will bring. I would like to get back in touch with friends that I have lost touch with. I also want to spend time with my family back in Connecticut. Now that I am not working and we are only a 6 or so hour drive away, Arabella and I will be able to make more frequent trips to visit.

So there they are, my 14 proposals. I am going to give them my all!

Happy New Year

Should auld acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot and days of Auld Lang Syne.

For Auld Lang Syne, my dear, for Auld Lang Syne,
We'll take a cup of kindness yet for Auld Lang Syne.

Every year when I hear this song it brings back so great memories of when Jay and I spent New Year's Eve 2006 in Times Square in NYC...what an amazing experience! However, this year was just a little more low key. We stayed up and watched Dick Clark's countdown and went to bed shortly thereafter. We did not even have champagne, we did not have any in the house and when Jay went out at 5:30 to pick up a bottle the stores were closed! And to think I used to think it was bad in Connecticut when you couldn't by alcohol after 8 pm or on Sundays.

Happy New Year! It has been snowing here for 3 days now. On Day 1 - New Year's Day, we took Arabella sledding for the first time. When we were moving in, one of the local mover's told us that the Pointe Claire Golf Course, which is nearby, has great hills for sledding. So we looked it up and actually found that it is the Beaconsfield Golf Club (a private course in Pointe Claire) that had the sledding hills. So we got bundled up and set out for a snowy drive to try and find the golf club. We found it and it was packed with cars! I find it amazing that a private golf club allows sledding on it's hills in the winter...now that would never happen in the States!

We all had fun and will go sledding again soon. Arabella loved it and she kept asking for more!

We also watched Ohio State win the Rose Bowl, GO BUCKS! Arabella was even cheering and clapping for the Buckeyes, and is now able to say "Bucks", now that makes us proud!

Our little gymnast watching the Rose Bowl!

We are sending Birthday Wishes to Uncle Bill who celebrated his birthday on New Year's Day - we hope you have a great year!

Yesterday we just did boring errands but did have brunch at a restaurant called Chez Cora. It was so yummy! We all had crepes!

Jay had the Sarrasin Surprise

I had the Lucie-la-framboise

Arabella had the fruit and custard crepe

May each of our family, friends and blog followers, have a healthy, blessed and wonderful 2010!
